Most of you have contemplated this or know someone who has considered reupholstering their old furniture. In most instances, the piece of furniture considered, is a piece that must mean something special to them – a family heirloom or an antique. Otherwise, beware of this costly endeavor. We have always had our opinions on this, knowing the cost of reupholstering, so we did some fact finding and this is what we found.
According to Home Advisor, the typical price to reupholster a chair is $400 – $1000, depending on the fabric and labor costs. In most situations, it’s cheaper to buy a new chair. Same applies to sofas and other upholstered pieces. The cost of a good quality upholstery fabric alone is at least $60 a yard and up.
Be aware of the original quality of the piece of furniture. Does it have a solid wood frame? Look at the spring system. If it doesn’t have a coil spring system it probably is not worth the cost of reupholstering. Check out the cushions. If they are lumpy, squishy or compress easily, it could be a poor investment.
You should always ask yourself – Is this piece of furniture valuable to me? Are the bones of this piece going to last another 15 years? Will I save money to reupholster rather than buy new? If you answer no to any of these questions, maybe it’s time to look for a new piece of furniture.
That’s where we come in. Sure, if it’s a piece that must stay in your family for your children or grandchildren…we understand. If not, we have the perfect new sofa for you.
