Color psychology is the study of hues as a factor of human behavior. Color influences perceptions that are not obvious, having a huge impact on the human mind – playing a very important role in how we feel about our surroundings.
Most designers, for instance, can tell you that color is a very powerful tool for creating meaning and mood for your living space. Complementing hues, contrast, and layering of color can help build just the right atmosphere for any room in your home.
Reds and oranges, for example, are high energy colors. Great for kitchens – known to increase appetite and stimulate the brain.
Green is the color of nature. Considered to be the most restful color for the eye, green can transcend a sense of calmness and security when used in interior design and actually well suited for any room in the house.
Yellow is all about optimism and happiness. Great for family gathering areas – giving the feeling of friendliness. Yellow promotes communication and openness along with enhancing positive thinking.
Blue, by far, is the most popular color – associated with trust, loyalty and wisdom. Just like with blue skies and blue water , it slows our heart rate, giving a calming effect – perfect for a bedroom or for any room in your home.
For those of you who lean toward neutral colors, such as beige, cream, ivory, white, grey and brown – the mood you will evoke will be just that – neutral. An atmosphere that plays it safe. If you are one that is not ready for bold colors, carefully place colors in areas gradually. If your home is neutral and you love it – keep it! Neutrals will always continue to flourish in the monochromatic color scheme.
