Selecting a rug size, of course, depends on the room size and arrangement of your furniture. It seems that 5×8 is the most popular size for living rooms, especially if you prefer to keep all the legs off the rug and only place the coffee table in the middle of the rug. Depending on how large your living area is, an 8×10 is a good choice to put all the front legs of your furniture on the rug to make a complete look. For larger living rooms a 9×12 can be used and all the furniture can be placed on your rug. A lot of it is personal taste and choice. For the dining room, the key is to select a rug large enough for the table and chairs to ALL be on the rug. A common standard is for the rug to extend 2 ft. on each side of the table. A 5×8 is most often used for a small table and 4 chairs. 8×10’s and 9×12’s are used for tables that seat up to 8 and 10 people. In bedrooms 5×8 should be used with a twin bed and 8×10 or 9×12 for 2 twins. Queen size beds – 8×10 or 9×12 and King size at least 8×10 better yet a 9×12. Laying the rug horizontally usually works the best. Any thing smaller would appear to be out of proportion. Outdoor rugs are a great way to add color and style to your outdoor living area.
