The two best types of leather to choose when purchasing leather furniture is FULL GRAIN and TOP GRAIN. The difference in these two leathers are important. The highest quality money can buy is Full Grain. It comes from the top layer of the hide and includes all the natural markings. It’s more expensive for manufactures to buy and more difficult to work with. Full grain gives you a natural feel and look. The second highest quality leather is Top Grain. Top Grain is the process of sanding down the natural grain from the top surface of the leather to get rid of imperfections. This difference makes the leather more workable for the manufacturer which is reflected in price. Then you get into ANILINE, SEMI-ANILINE, and PIGMENTED. Sounds complicated, doesn’t it?. It shouldn’t be! Aniline simply means ALL NATURAL – no protective coating, less resistant to soiling, but will naturally age over time. Pigmented – a coating has been put on it for protection; the most durable, and semi-aniline simply means in between both; a light surface coating has been applied. Take a deep breath and relax, these are the only kinds of leathers we have at Deloulfeur Décor & Designs. Things to look out for – Some companies cut corners and only use real leather on the area the body touches, and use vinyl on sides and back. They also use lower grade materials such as bonded leather which is made up of leftovers of the hide including dust and shavings. When considering leather for your home keep in mind these few simple things before making your selection.
