Following the death of George Washington in 1799 is where the story of President’s Day begins. His February 22nd birthday became a casual day of observance most of the 1800’s and by 1879 congress made it an official holiday – then in 1971 the date was changed to the third Monday of February (in between Lincoln’s and Washington’s birthday).
Ultimately in 1971 it was moved into the Uniform Monday Holiday Act – an attempt to create more 3 day weekends for the nation’s workers. So, if you are wondering what does observing our past presidents have to do with a “sale”? We think it has a lot to do with the 3-day weekends. Marketing quickly caught on to this and we soon saw President’s Day Sales. Our research finds that furniture and mattress are high on the list to purchase during this time. Discounts are highest in January and in 3-day holiday weekends such as Presidents Day. So, if you have been waiting to buy one of the higher ticket items, it’s looking as though Presidents Day might be the time to purchase!
Interesting fact: Abraham Lincoln was a master craftsman, making a cherry day bed around 1810 – Now in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield IL.
